Microsoft’s cross-platform smartband will launch in October: Report

Sunday June 29, 2014, 3:45 PM

nike-fuelbandWe first learnt about Microsoft’s plans to launch a wearable last month, which indicated that the company was working on a smartwatch that would come with fitness and heart rate monitoring capabilities. Microsoft’s Xbox team was first reported to be working on this project last year and today we might have finally learned about the launch plans among other details.

Citing sources, Tom’s Hardware reports that the device will indeed be cross platform and will also be compatible with iOS and Android, which is a major limitation of Android Wear smartwatches as well as reportedly Apple’s iWatch. The sources also claim that the display will be on the inside of the wrist rather than outside, which “feels more natural” or you will have to just turn your palm up to check it. This would feel more natural especially on the move.

From the looks of it, Microsoft’s wearable device would be more of a smartband like Nike’s FuelBand (pictured above) rather than a smartwatch. The report claims that the device would be thinner and flatter than the FuelBand. It also says that it will have as many as 11 sensors and will be powered by silicon from Texas Instruments and Atmel.

The report finally mentions that Microsoft is planning to launch it in October, which would put it around the same time as Apple’s reported timeline for the iWatch launch.
