World’s largest antivirus company admits antivirus software is dead

Tuesday May 6, 2014, 11:48 AM

antivirus-softwareSymantec has accepted that the antivirus software “is all but dead” as hackers are still able to get access despite software protecting the machine. According to the Wall Street Journal, the antivirus software maker will now focus on spotting an attack and minimize the damage.

Speaking to WSJ,Symantec’s senior vice president for information security said, “Antivirus “is dead”, we don’t think of antivirus as a moneymaker in any way.”

Rather than simply focusing on developing antivirus software, the company is instead working on technologies to spot an anomaly in a company’s network and work on minimizing the damage of the cyber attack. It is also creating its own response team to quickly help businesses that have been attacked, and also hold meetings with its clients to brief them about how to protect themselves from such attacks.

Symantec isn’t the only company which has moved on from antivirus software; McAfee too is focusing on spotting and minimizing attacks. Other companies like Juniper Networks has advised its customers to place fake data to distract hackers, while another company called Shape Security too wants its customers to use fake credit-card and passwords to confuse hackers.
