Micromax to launch 30 smartphones in 2013, beats Samsung in phablet shipments

Micromax will launch 30 smartphones in India this year, CEO Deepak Mehrotra revealed during the launch of the A116 Canvas HD phablet. The company has been on a streak of launching smartphones since mid-2012 and has introduced a number of best-selling products including the Pixel A90S and its Canvas range of phablets.

According to Mehrotra, Micromax became India’s number one brand in phablets in the last quarter of 2012. The Indian handset brand claims to have imported 198,000 units of phablets (defined as smartphones with displays larger than 5-inches) during the period compared to Samsung’s 189,000 units of Galaxy Note and Galaxy Note II. Other vendors imported just 38,000 units during the same period. The numbers, provided by Micromax, remain unverified at the moment.

Phablets are expected to dominate smartphone shipments this year, with most players launching their flagship smartphones with at least a 5-inch display, some like Huawei even crossing the 6-inch mark. Samsung is also set to launch the Galaxy Grand in India later today.
